Eating abroad with coeliac disease or a food allergy

A language barrier turns a managed condition into a gamble. The fix is mostly logistical, and it is worth doing before you leave.

What EU rules give you

The fourteen major allergens — including cereals containing gluten — must be declared across the EU, in packaged food and in food service. The rules are uniform enough that a coeliac traveller moving between member states faces the same labelling framework, which is a substantial and under-appreciated advantage.

What varies is enforcement, how food service discloses (verbally, on a menu, in a folder), and cultural familiarity with the condition. Some countries have high public awareness of coeliac disease; others treat it as a preference.

The practical system

  1. Get a translation card in the local language, stating the condition medically, naming what must be avoided, and mentioning shared fryers and surfaces. A card goes to the kitchen; a spoken sentence does not.
  2. Learn to read the ingredient list, not the language. Allergens are emphasised typographically across the EU, so you can find them without reading the rest.
  3. Book accommodation with a fridge and a kettle. It converts a difficult trip into an ordinary one.
  4. Carry safe food for travel days. Airports, stations and long journeys are where people get caught.
  5. Find the local coeliac or allergy association. Most European countries have one, several publish venue lists.
  6. Take enough medication — including adrenaline auto-injectors where relevant — and carry a prescription letter.

Insurance and documentation

Check that travel insurance covers your condition, and carry documentation of any medication in original packaging with a prescription letter. Within the EU, the European Health Insurance Card covers necessary state-provided treatment, which is not the same as travel insurance and does not replace it.

Common questions

Are translation cards actually useful?
Yes, more than speaking. A card can be handed to the kitchen, which is where the decisions are made.
Which European countries are easiest with coeliac disease?
Awareness varies more than regulation does. National coeliac societies are the best current source rather than any generalisation.
Can I take my medication across borders?
Generally yes in original packaging with a prescription letter. Check controlled substances specifically.
What if I get glutened abroad?
Manage symptoms and hydration. There is no treatment for an exposure — see our coeliac site.
